Safe and healthy work environments (Entornos laborales seguros y saludables – ELSSA) is a free, voluntary and non-punitive programme from the Mexican Social Security Institute (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social – IMSS) that aims to foster three-way coordination and participation between companies, workers and the IMSS. It looks to implement strategies and actions to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of workers in workplaces, while at the same time promoting productivity and quality.
The ELSSA programme recognizes that working environments directly affect workers’ habits and quality of life, which is why it looks to improve work environments to promote and generate healthy behaviours and results. It offers a digital platform (https://elssa.imss.gob.mx) that serves as a self-management tool through which companies can access resources and advice to take action in the fields of safety, health and well-being at work to the benefit of their workers.
From May 2022 to date, more than 7,112 companies have joined the ELSSA programme, benefiting more than 2,481,000 workers and providing more than 29,000 consultations. Additionally, more than 6,433 workplaces have been awarded the ELSSA quality mark.
