The Regional Social Security Forum for Asia and the Pacific took place in Seoul, Republic of Korea, from 30 October to 1 November 2012, at the invitation of the National Pension Service of the Republic of Korea.

The Regional Social Security Forum for Asia and the Pacific provided a privileged platform for social security policy-makers, CEOs, senior managers, researchers and representatives of regional and international organizations to analyse and debate the central role of social security for the Asia and Pacific region.

There is now widespread recognition of the essential contribution of social security to meeting wider developmental goals. Governments in Asia and the Pacific have embraced social protection as a means to address poverty and inequality and to promote the general health and well-being of their citizens.

The event programme included sessions on the following themes:

  • Extending coverage to vulnerable groups in Asia and the Pacific: The role of social security institutions.
  • Proactive and preventive strategies for improving social security performance.
  • Technological innovations as a strategy to improve service quality.

A highlight of the Forum was the announcement of the ISSA Good Practice Award for Asia and the Pacific, which recognized outstanding achievements in the development of social security in the region.

The Forum culminated in a high-level summit discussion on future challenges and priorities for social security in the region, involving policy-makers and representatives of international organizations.
