German Social Accident Insurance

Improving occupational health and safety in the construction sector thanks to artificial intelligence / A case of the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Construction Sector (BG BAU)

Implementation year

The German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Construction Sector (Berufsgenossenschaft der Bauwirtschaft – BG BAU) recognizes the enormous potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the public sector, and is playing a pioneering role in exploring its use in social insurance. As part of a project entitled “AI-based support for targeted accident prevention” (“KI-basierte Unterstützung für zielgenaue Unfallprävention”), which was financed by the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales – BMAS), an AI-based application was developed and trained using open-source technologies and around 10 million data points. The application gives labour inspectors recommendations about which companies they should visit in order to help prevent serious and fatal accidents. It helps inspectors quickly identify shortcomings in a company’s occupational safety measures and provide targeted advice to help prevent serious accidents and injuries.
