Silverexpo: Latin America’s first trade fair for older people and their families

Implementation year
2019

The Colombian Pension Administrator (Administradora Colombiana de Pensiones – Colpensiones) created a well-being model as part of its “value-added services” macro-process value chain. This model promotes a range of actions aimed at pensioners and beneficiaries of the Periodic Financial Benefits (Beneficios Económicos Periódicos – BEPS) programme, with a view to improving their well-being and quality of life. The model launched in 2019 with a portfolio of 12 products and programmes to be implemented. One of the highest-impact elements was Colombia’s – and Latin America’s – first-ever trade fair for older people, Silverexpo Bogotá, which took place in 2019. The trade fair showcased experiences, services and activities aimed at this demographic group, and received more than 11,000 visitors that first year.

In 2022, Silverexpo Bogotá ran from 11 to 14 August. The aim was to consolidate the event’s position as the most important and impactful forum across the age groups, with an intergenerational focus on older people’s business ventures, entertainment and well-being, as well as that of their families, friends and carers.

A range of cultural, leisure, informative, “silver enterprise” and learning activities were offered to the more than 10,000 attendees, through 79 exhibitors, 28 silver economy ventures, 25 cultural activities and 75 academic talks. Specialized products and services for older people were showcased, while the various artistic spaces offered a plethora of wellness experiences.

At this fair, Colpensiones provided 28 complimentary stands to give older entrepreneurs and their products visibility, thereby encouraging the development of entrepreneurial skills. Through this initiative, pensioners, older people and entrepreneurs from the BEPS programme were able to take part, free of charge.

For the first time, the Ministry of Labour, led by Dr Gloria Inés Ramírez, followed the roll-out of Silverexpo in 2022. Considering it good practice in terms of the silver economy and, above all, a platform for entrepreneurship among older people, they expressed an interest in taking a similar format to other Colombian cities. This is how Colpensiones came to replicate this initiative, in a more dynamic and roadshow-like format, in three other cities (Barranquilla, Cali and Medellín), bolstering older people’s business ventures so as to strengthen the region’s silver economy.
