Making dialysis greener in the Tunisian National Social Security Fund’s policlinics: Sousse policlinic trial

Implementation year
2014

The Tunisian National Social Security Fund (Caisse nationale de sécurité sociale – CNSS) is a public entity that manages private sector social security and has six policlinics (day clinics) across Tunisia: two in Grand Tunis, and one in Bizerte, Sousse, Sfax and Gafsa (Métlaoui) respectively. These policlinics are made up of medical units, laboratories, pharmacies, and haemodialysis units.

This project looks to optimize water consumption in CNSS policlinics by focusing on wastewater from haemodialysis units. The technique, which aims to improve the quality of life of those on dialysis, is a high-impact treatment in ecological terms because it uses water to prepare dialysate, rinse, reprocess dialysis membranes and disinfect generators. In 2014, the Sousse policlinic carried out a trial to reuse the wastewater from the dialysis osmosis loop, which led to a reduction in water consumption at the policlinic.
