Social security institutions collect, run and administer large volumes of data to provide social security services to the citizens and beneficiaries. They are already investing significant resources in transforming these data into knowledge through big data analytics, to improve their administration and the delivery of their services, mine valuable information, predict future outcomes and make data-driven decisions.
As a concept, big data refers to large, diverse sets of information that grow at ever-increasing rates: It incorporates the Volume of information, the Velocity (or speed) at which it is created and collected, and the Variety or scope of the data points which are being covered, resulting in the well-known “three V’s” of big data.
Big data analytics becomes then the process of examining big data to unveil information – such as patterns and correlations – which help institutions in decision-making processes. It encompasses applications with elements such as predictive models to forecast future developments, machine learning which practices algorithms to analyse large data sets, and artificial intelligence (AI) powered by analytical systems and software.
Although the potential of big data analytics is substantial, the analytics process is often complex, and issues may arise when conclusions and insights are derived inaccurately.
This ISSA Webinar focuses on the opportunities and challenges of applying big data analytics in social security administrations and to learn more about the advancements in data science in the context of social protection.
