Public budgets are under high pressure worldwide, even more due to COVID-19. Rising health care costs and strained budgets underscore the need to ensure that scarce health care resources reach the people that most need them.  Therefore, actions are needed to improve appropriate care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines appropriateness from a system’s perspective as care that is effective, efficient and in line with ethical principles of fair allocation. Researchers and policy makers have made efforts to conceptualize and measure appropriate care and it has been recognized as an important element of high-quality care delivery.

Actions target the delivery of care, the management of health services and the governance of health care systems. Strategies include, among others, stopping spending on actions that do not result in value, changing approaches when equivalent but less pricy alternatives of equal value exist.

Appropriate care delivery could be a unifying goal to help coordinate efforts to improve health outcomes and ensure system sustainability. This webinar will provide a contemporary snapshot of how appropriate care is understood and addressed in the hospital sector in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, illustrated by innovative approaches developed by ISSA members.
