"The politics of irresponsibility practiced by successive Greek governments since 1975 have resulted in the effective bankruptcy of the country and the request for international financial assistance in the form of a joint European Commission/International Monetary Fund/European Central Bank (EC/IMF/ECB) financing package and supporting economic policies. The Economic Adjustment Programme for Greece imposed a drastic and hasty reform of the pension system with the aim of improving the long-term sustainability of the pension system, to simplify its operation and to increase labour force participation. Undoubtedly, all these policies were necessary."
