Virtually all African countries have statutory social security schemes, although only around ten per cent of the African population has access to comprehensive social security. Trends in the extension of coverage are generally positive, although wide disparities between countries and sub-regions remain.

The national social security programme information, indicators and statistics are collected through surveys and research carried out by the ISSA in co-operation with the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). Analytical articles are prepared by the ISSA General Secretariat, with external authors wherever these are recognized. Articles in the media monitor and external publications are selected by the ISSA documentation service.

The designations employed, which are in conformity with United Nations practice, and the presentation of material and maps therein do not imply the expression of any opinion on the part of the ISSA concerning the legal status of any country, area or territory or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers.
