Background

The International Media Festival for Prevention (IMFP)

The International Media Festival for Prevention is an integral part of the World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, which takes place every 3 years. The festival offers an overview of films and multimedia productions about safety and health at work from all over the world and provides an opportunity for participants to present their projects to a major group of influential international safety and health professionals.

About the Festival

Since 1990, the Festival has regularly been run in the framework of the World Congress for Safety and Health at Work. Awards are given to media productions that contribute to the improvement of safety and health at the workplace. Awards are presented in the categories “Film” and “Multimedia”. All films and multimedia productions, e.g. films, websites, apps, web based training, social media and software are admitted. Submissions can be made by national and international organizations, by enterprises or institutions as well as by agencies or filmmakers.

Submission Procedure and Material Specifications

The submission starts around one year before the Festival takes place. There is no limit on the number of entries submitted or the presentation time of the productions. All entries must be submitted using an entry form available online.

Languages

The official languages of the World Congress are English, French, Spanish and German. The submission form must be filled out in one of these languages. However, films and multimedia products themselves can be produced in any other language.

Award Ceremony

An international jury selects the nominees and winners of the International Media Award for Prevention. Prizes will be awarded during the World Congress on Safety and Health during the Special Media Session.

International Media Festival for Prevention 2017
Singapore, 3-6 September 2017

The X International Media Festival for Prevention at the World Congress for Safety and Health at Work in Singapore in 2017 attracted 235 entries from 38 countries. From these entries, 48 productions were nominated for the Media Award by international juries of media and prevention experts. During the Special Media Session in Singapore, nine entries - six films and three multimedia products - were awarded in front of 3000 Congress’ visitors.

The Special Media Session was moderated by Martina Hesse-Spötter, at that time Secretary General of the ISSA Electricity Section and now Chair of the Section, and Chris Brow. According to Mrs. Hesse-Spötter, "the countries of origin were as diverse as the approaches of the producers”. She added: "Films are much shorter today. Many films are no more than 60 seconds.  We see much greater use of emotion in films and the impact of accidents not only on workers but also on their family, friends and work colleagues."

During the 3-day Congress, all the nominated productions were presented in the IMFP Cinema: a room with a big screen, a stage, popcorn and Singaporean specialties. This cinema allocated around 100 persons.

All the nominated participants had the chance to have an interview with a member of the Jury in order to tell the audience more about their production.  This was a great platform for discussion about media in the prevention area.

The submitted films, including winners and nominees from 2014 and 2017, can be found in the following website: www.mediainprevention.org
