On the final day of the Forum and as the high point of the week’s deliberations in Cape Town, the Summit considered how social security’s acknowledged role as a key enabler of social stability and economic development can be more firmly anchored in national policy. An issue that was deliberated was the strengthening of political will in support of social security.
Consideration was also given to the long-term policy implications of the economic crisis for the development of social security systems worldwide. A key concern was that social security must continue to evolve in a dynamic manner to meet the needs of populations adequately.
This event was the second World Social Security Summit, and built upon the work of four Regional Social Security Forums held in Kigali, Manila, Warsaw and Brasilia between 2008 and 2010. The first World Social Security Summit was held on the occasion of the first World Social Security Foru m in Moscow in 2007.
