South Africa and Cape Town offer a dynamic and hospitable context for the World Social Security Forum, the first on the African continent.
The Republic of South Africa is, both socially and economically, one of the most developed countries in the region. Known as the "Rainbow Nation", South Africa is famous for its diversity of cultures, languages and religious beliefs.
The South African authorities have invested heavily in social development, and their social security systems are among the most comprehensive in Africa. Millions of South Africans now benefit from the expansion of the social safety net.
Cape Town is the second-most populous city in South Africa, and is the legislative capital of the country. Cape Town is famous for its harbour as well as its natural setting, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain, which served as inspiration for the Forum logo. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and has a population of around 3.5 million.
