With an eye towards addressing the extension of coverage to the uncovered majority in Africa, the ISSA Liaison Office for Southern Africa organized a Technical Seminar on the Extension of Social Security Coverage on 27-28 May 2010. Hosted by the Department of Social Security of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in Lusaka, Zambia, an ISSA member organization, the event was opened by Dr Winnie Sithole Mwenda, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, with opening remarks made by Mr S. Z. Phiri, CEO of National Pension Scheme Authority. Mr M Nkabinde, representing Prince Lonkhokhela Dlamini, Chief Executive Officer of the Swaziland National Provident Fund and member of the Steering Committee of the ISSA Liaison Office, spoke of the background and objective of the Seminar, and ISSA Technical Adviser for Africa, Joseph Ewane Ejuba, provided an overview of the issues and possible options for extending social security coverage in Africa. The seminar provided a forum in which members shared experiences, with a view to identifying innovative and successful approaches adopted and the lessons learnt in the process. Particular focus was given to Zambia with sessions dedicated to the role of social security coverage in the Zambian economy. Participants also spoke of the benefits associated with extending coverage, including more inclusive societies and sustainable pro-poor economic growth.
