The Stefanko Best Paper Award, established in 1983, recognizes authors presenting papers in the Coal & Energy Division technical sessions, at SME Annual Meetings, for their contributions to the body of knowledge. The awarded has been named after Dr Robert Stefanko, SME President 1979 to 1981.
The paper has been selected by an international jury of mine researchers. Kretschmann and Ehnes received the award on the occasion of SME’s annual meeting in Seattle WA 21 February as the first non-US scientists ever.
“I feel very honoured upon receiving this award”, Kretschmann said. “It shows the recognition of the high level of research by universities of applied sciences in Germany also on an international scale. Our joint success stands for the excellent cooperation between mine research, mining authorities, operators, and the accident insurance.”
„Modern OSH needs the active dialogue of all stakeholders, also across borders,“ added Ehnes. We need to share results. Only this way we will sustainably improve safety and health in mining. I feel honoured that our joint efforts have found such acclaim and hope this will be a beacon for initiatives to come.“
