Women and social security: Between tradition, modernity and equality of access to benefits ‐ The Tunisian approach
Tunisian women benefit from a different legal status than in the rest of the Arab and Muslim world. The prohibition of polygamy and repudiation, and the legalization of abortion and family planning have allowed the recomposition of the family based on a more modern approach.

By providing for the right of wives to work, travel, open bank accounts and even start businesses without the authorization of their husbands, the Personal Status Code has opened the way for women to be economically independent, all of which has greatly encouraged the establishment of occupational social security. In this respect, equality between men and women, as demonstrated by the figures, is ensured within schemes in terms of both individual rights and derived rights. In certain cases, slight positive discrimination in favour of women is even evident. Finally, the advantages acquired by Tunisian women, through their individual and derived rights in the field of social security, are setting themselves on a dynamic path of positive and inalienable modernity, without losing their souls, history, culture or Arab and Muslim civilization.
