Extending social protection for unorganized sector workers in India: One step forward, two steps backward?
This paper discusses recent interventions and initiatives in India for providing social security to unorganized sector workers, and argues that the initial impetus gained in the social security front is not retained.

Citing the neglect of the crucial recommendations by the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganized Sector (NCEUS) and the shortfalls of the Unorganized Sector Workers’ Social Security Act of 2008, the essay takes the view that in a period of neo-liberal planning guided by high growth rates, somehow, the significant concerns of welfare and social security of the labouring poor remain grossly unaddressed.
