Within the overall theme of prevention, the programme of the Social Security Week addressed a range of key themes of interest to social security institutions in the region, including:
The Social Security Week commemorated the entry into force of ILO Convention 102 on Social Security (Minimum Standards) on 27 April 1955, which remains a cornerstone of social security worldwide, and coincided with the World Day on Safety and Health at Work on 28 April 2011. The topic of prevention and occupational safety and health was consequently given particular attention in the programme.
The Social Security Week in the Americas was an initiative of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), the Ibero-American Organization of Social Security (OISS), the Inter-American Conference on Social Security (CISS), and the International Labour Organization (ILO), in coordination with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the Mexican Institute for Social Services and Security for State Workers (ISSSTE).
