The first Global Forum on the Seoul Declaration for Safety and Health at Work was held in the capital of the Republic of Korea on 10 September, involving representatives of international, regional and national organizations responsible for occupational safety and health.
The ISSA Secretary General Hans-Horst Konkolewsky, who represented the ISSA at the first Global Forum, commented that the meeting underlined "the firm commitment of the Korean signatories to turn the words of the Declaration into action. The Forum demonstrated that the Declaration can give new impetus to the national dialogue on the prevention of work-related accidents and ill-health and bring about promising new ideas for partnership and action, which in the case of Korea is particularly welcome as accident figures over the last years have stopped their downwards trend and stagnated."
Mr. Konkolewsky emphasized the importance that social security organizations through the ISSA were giving to ensure that the Seoul Declaration becomes an international reference in the workplace.
The Seoul Declaration on Safety and Health at Work was adopted on 29 June 2008 by some 50 high-level decision-makers from around the world as a major new blueprint for constructing a global culture of safety and health at work, and has already been translated into ten languages. The Summit at which the Declaration was agreed was co-organized by the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) together with the International Social Security Association (ISSA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
