The role of pension funds as institutional investors in Tanzania: Challenges and opportunities
The role of pension funds as institutional investors in Tanzania: Challenges and opportunities
Multiple crises compel Social Security Institutions (SSIs) to be more responsive by adopting and implementing measures that aim at addressing the socio-economic impact of the downturn.

It is also noted that some SSIs are facing difficulties to operate effectively and only a few are operating smoothly. The prevailing economic conditions on one hand create business opportunities, and on the other hand pose challenges for the SSIs. The implications noted so far are reflected in the investment losses incurred and in increased expenditures. Thus, in order for SSIs to continue providing improved benefits packages, they must identify unexploited potential opportunities. This paper therefore reviews the current situation of PFs’ investment activities, the global crisis and its impact on the operations of PFs. Finally, the paper recommends the feasible approaches which PFs can adopt in responding to the challenges of the global crisis and exploiting emerging investments opportunities.
