Inquiry on Work Related Health Risks: Research and Company Practice
A working group on Work Related Health Risks aimed at establishing a document on research and company practice and worked on the identification, evaluation and effective prevention of work-related health risks. With the participation of the German BIA, the Austrian AUVA and the French INRS, it launched an inquiry using a questionnaire and interviews of the national occupational health and safety institutes and organisations in and outside Europe.

Special problems and deficits in practical prevention of work-related health risks were determined and the experts identified strategies to solve the existing difficulties, according to their risk category and their prevention step.

The main results can be summarized as follows:

  • Deficits in the prevention of work-related health risks are closely linked to the economic performance of a country (gross national product).
  • For nearly all risk categories, the main problems are the choice of suitable specific prevention measures as well as the assessment of their effectiveness.
  • Solutions involve in particular to develop the expertise of employers and employees through information and training.
  • The acceptance of preventive measures relies essentially on the proof of their efficacy and practicability.

This document contains these preliminary results that were presented for the first time at the World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Vienna in May 2002.

The complete final report is also available.
