The purpose of the new regulations is to avoid over-provision (in particular on account of the similarly worded provisions governing widowers' pensions) in order not to bring into question the principle of provision for survivors.

As from 1 January 1995, the rate of the survivors' pension awarded by the general scheme, the agricultural employees' scheme, and the craftsmen and shopkeepers' schemes, was increased from 52 to 54 per cent of the deceased spouse's retirement pension.
