ISSA marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2012
国际社会保障协会, 2012.04.25 | Feature
For more than 50 years the ISSA has served as an international platform to advocate for the prevention of occupational risks. In collaboration with the International Labour Organization, the ISSA is once again actively supporting the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April 2012.

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work has been observed by the ILO since 2003, and is a significant advocacy tool to raise awareness about how to make work safe and healthy and to raise the political profile of occupational safety and health. The ISSA supports the World Day campaign and encourages social security organizations involved in prevention to promote the campaign through activities and events.

Message by the ISSA Secretary General

Safety and health at work lie at the heart of social security. The prevention efforts provided by social security organizations to society over the years have led to a significant decrease in occupational accidents and diseases. This has not only saved millions of lives and prevented enormous human suffering, it has also helped social security institutions to better anticipate and manage risks and reduce costs for compensation and rehabilitation.

The prevention of occupational safety and health risks has consequently been at the centre of ISSA activities.

By providing good practices, information, research, expert advice and platforms for exchange, the ISSA's Special Commission and its 12 International Sections have contributed to shaping social security policies that foster comprehensive and integrated preventive approaches to safety and health risks at work.

However, new challenges resulting from changes in society and the world of work, such as the increased focus on developing a green economy, require further investments to develop and implement innovative and holistic approaches to prevention.

Importantly, our latest international research has documented the economic case for prevention. The ISSA study indicates that enterprises investing in the health and safety of their workforce can expect a positive return of more than 200 per cent. In other words, safety and health is good for workers and good for business.

The ISSA is therefore marking the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 of April with a positive and forward-looking message: The ISSA firmly believes that "prevention pays" and that every accident and occupational disease can be prevented if all actors in society share this vision and contribute to reaching this objective.

Together, we can build a truly global culture of prevention.

Hans-Horst Konkolewsky
ISSA Secretary General
