Accident Statistics
国际社会保障协会, 2009.07.31 | News
The International Section of the ISSA on Prevention in the Mining Industry would like to collect accident statistics for the mining industry all over the world. A start has been made with data from Germany, comparing figures from 1999 to 2008.

If you know of sources for data in other regions, please drop us a message.

Germany

Mining accidents are documented in two categories in Germany: one, the Bergbau-Berufsgenossenschaft (BBG) as the insurance provider basically for underground mining (black coal, lignite, salt, ore), and two, Steinbruchs-Berufsgenossenschaft (StBG) as the insurer for open pit mining / quarries.

1. BBG Figures (Underground Mining)

1.1 Notifiable Accidents
A notifiable accident according to the German definition is an incident leading to more than three days of unfitness to work.

The total number for 2008 was 1,217 cases for BBG.

The figure of notifiable accidents per 1 million work hours dropped 52% within the last 10 years.

1.2 Work accidents leading to new pensions
BBG registered 142 work accidents which lead to new pensions in 2008. Compared to 1999, the quote of work accidents leading to new pensions per one million work hours dropped 42%.

1.3 Fatalities
In BBG's area, 4 workers lost their lives due to work accidents in 2008.

Ten years ago, it has been 13 cases.

2. StBG Figures (Open Pit Mining and Other Industries Such As Concrete, Asphalt, ...)

StBG registred 5,820 notifiable work accidents in 2008, as opposed to 9,061 in 1999.

2.2 Work accidents leading to new pensions

Comprehensive data for StBG is available online at http://www.stbg.de/site.aspx?url=html/stat/index.html
The text is German; figures and graphs are available though.

The data of BBG up to 2007:

An accident examples of an incident on hazards with improper handling of compressed oxygen in a closed-circuit respiratory protection apparatus is available.

The Section on Prevention in the Mining Industry is most interested of comparable figures from other areas. If you have any information, we would be most appreciative if you send us an e-mail !
