The Social Security Corporation (SSC) of Jordan introduced two new social security benefits: Unemployment and Maternity benefits. Implementation of the new schemes started the 1 September 2011.
Maternity insurance will help boost woman's participation in the labour market and promote job security, while unemployment insurance is intended to support job seekers who lost their jobs by giving them the right to receive a percentage of their former wage for a maximum period of three months on the condition that they provide job search evidence.
The SSC installed a state of the art IT system to support the project in conjunction with a national awareness campaign through different media channels.
Unemployment insurance will be financed through a contribution of 1 per cent of salary payable by employees and 0.5 per cent of payroll for employers. For the maternity benefits, the contribution is 0.75 per cent of salary payable by both male and female employees.
