New strategies for old-age income security in low-income countries
New strategies for old-age income security in low-income countries
The political sustainability of existing pension schemes and the role of survivors' benefits will be discussed.

Although most older people in the developing world continue to work, few earn enough to cover their basic needs, let alone to support their dependants.

Income support for the older poor is a core element of new strategies for extending social security protection to uncovered populations. Possible strategies include the extension of social insurance to rural and informal workers or creating a basic universal pension.

The political sustainability of existing pension schemes and the role of survivors' benefits will be discussed.
