Social Security Observatory

The ISSA Observatory monitors social security programmes worldwide, and provides information on key issues and analysis of major developments in social security.

Country profiles

  The Country Profiles serve as an overview of social security programmes in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe. Scheme descriptions are provided for over 170 countries and territories, and profiles of complementary and private pensions in 50 countries. For each country, they also contain social security scheme reform descriptions, good practices and resources for further reading.

Good Practices in Social Security

In the context of the ISSA, a good practice is defined as any type of experience (e.g. an action, a measure, a process, a programme, a project, or a technology) implemented within a social security organization that fosters the improvement of its administrative and operational capacities, and/or the efficient and effective delivery of programmes. This interface presents the same practices as the Country Profiles, but offers additional search criteria.

 The Reforms database provides succinct descriptions of the major reforms in social protection schemes worldwide since 1995. The database includes information on existing and planned social security reforms. This interface presents the same reforms as the Country Profiles, but offers additional search criteria.

Scheme Descriptions (Advanced Search)

 The Scheme Description database contains concise outlines of national social security programmes in over 170 countries and territories. The database presents unique data on the evolution of national social security programmes throughout the world since 1995. The Country Profiles show the most recent scheme descriptions only, while the Advanced Search will also return historical descriptions.

Complementary and Private Pensions (Advanced Search)

 The Complementary and Private Pensions database provides in-depth information on the regulation and supervision of voluntary and mandatory occupational pension plans as well as mandatory private pension schemes in around 60 countries. The Country Profiles show the most recent pension scheme descriptions only, while the Advanced Search will also return historical descriptions.
