Brussels, Belgium
The two major subjects which were discussed during the symposium were ageing and globalization, in relation to safety and health in the construction industry. The issue was treated at three levels: the industry, the company and the individual.
Theme 1: Ageing of the construction workforce
Life expectancy of employees in the construction industry is increasing in many nations and will most likely continue to do so.
- How has ageing affected construction in your country?
- What are effects of ageing on employers, workers or social insurance systems?
- Does ageing only have an effect on the elderly?
- What can we do to accomodate all workers so they can stay productive longer?
- Do older workers have more or less injuries and illnesses than younger workers?
- Do older workers add value to construction or are they mainly liabilities?
- Should ageing get special consideration in risk assessment?
Globalization in construction
Globalization in construction is now a reality which is producing benefits and problems.
- Is migrant labor a major issue in your country?
- What are the main challenges concerning occupational safety and health?
- Does globalization produce new opportunities for employers and employees from emerging countries?
- How does globalization affect the transfer of best construction practices, including those that improve occupational safety and health?
- What are the impacts on fair competition, and the progress that has been made in occupational safety and health?
- How do we protect national labour standards from the pressures of globalization?
- What are the main measures to reduce the negative of globalization on occupational safety and health in the construction industry?
- Should globalization need special consideration in risk assessment?
- Are the current approaches to international standardization on occupational safety and health-management systems in the construction adequate?
