Potentials for an Efficient Reduction of Accidents at Work: ISSA Mining Shares Expertise in Asian Workshop
2009/12/08 | الأخبار
Reporting and documentation of accidents at work is a vital element to tailored rehabilitation measures as well as targeted prevention initiatives. Reason enough for the International Labour Organization (ILO) to initiate the National Workshop “Reporting system on occupational accidents and diseases” in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on December 7, 2009.

ISSA Mining gave insight on this matter with two presentations, showing Germany’s system on reporting and documentation as a proven example and explaining how targeted prevention initiatives can be derived from comprehensive knowledge of accident statistics.

Helmut Ehnes, Director Prevention of BBG.StBG. Germany and Secretary-general of ISSA Mining and Gerhard Czuck, Senior Technical Inspector and Advisor to ISSA Mining demonstrated how high numbers of severe accidents using conveyor belts and frequent cases of silicosis have been significantly reduced by comprehensive, made-to-measure campaigns, basing on valid and reliable data.

The local situation in Vietnam has been presented by the Bureau for Safe Work and the Department of Preventive Medicine and Environment, Vietnam. The achivements and challeges in the Asian region have been discussed by Tsuyoshi Kawakami, Senior Specialist on OSH, ILO Subregional Office for East Asia, Thailand. To show chances and potentials of accident investigations on the company level, MIBRAG’s system has been chosen as a model of best practice. MIBRAG as a large German lignite mining corporation serves as a blueprint for Vietnam’s mining industry.

The presentations started an active discussion among the participants on chances and benefits of the implementation of reporting systems.
