The European “social model” has proven to be a robust and proactive instrument in meeting the challenges presented
by the recent economic downturn. Its role in helping stimulate recovery across the region will be no less important. However,
in a context of fiscal restraint, the longer-term financial challenge for social security programmes will be determined
by the duration of the crisis and its lasting consequences.
