Demographic change is recognized as one of the most important challenges that social security institutions face. Population ageing will impact upon all social security provisions from health and long-term care, pensions, unemployment and disability programmes, to family structures impacting on family benefits. If all countries are to adapt successfully to the challenges ahead, key policy lessons must be learned.
