The searching, mining and extraction of mineral resources is associated with numerous health risks throughout the world - in spite of differing mining conditions. This is why the mining profession - even with advanced mechanisation - is still one of the most dangerous of all. Furthermore raw materials like hard and brown coal are amongst the most important energy providers. Against this background, the question regarding social security for miners in the case of industrial accidents or occupational disease has earned special attention.
How miners are covered in a social system, what benefits they receive and if measures are taken to prevent industrial accidents and occupational diseases, were the subject of a world-wide survey.
A questionnaire regarding social security was sent to about 70 countries world-wide. Most of these countries conduct many different types of mining. Replies were received from a total of 32 countries on all the continents. Answers were successfully obtained from all the countries that are the most important producers of hard and brown coal.
The report evaluates the countries' answers according to certain main points and includes other general resources. The aim is to illustrate which forms of cover exist and to show the similarities and the differences that occur.
