The Chinese Government’s experience and practices in extending social insurance coverage

China is one of the developing countries with the largest population in the world. It is one of the most pressing priorities for the Chinese social security to further expand its scope of coverage and allow more people to have access to social security. In recent years, the Chinese government has, through reform initiatives such as improving legislation, increasing budget allocations, enhancing enforcement inspection and upgrading management and service, extended proactively the scope of social insurance coverage and given an increasing number of people access to social security. Next step, we will continue to implement and improve our reform measures, constantly draw on the advanced and useful experience from various countries, and strive to achieve the goal of covering the whole population under the social insurance system (encompassing pension and health care, etc) by 2020.
