Reimbursing insured members via SMS
The National Health Insurance Fund (Caisse nationale d’assurance maladie (CNAM)) of Mauritania introduced this practice for reimbursing insured persons using the mobile phone SMS (short message system) system.
Reimbursing insured members via SMS

To implement this practice, the CNAM partnered with Mauripost (Mauritanian Postal System), telecommunication operators and the University of Aix-Marseille. The aim was to enable those insured by the CNAM to benefit from telecommunication networks to access information provided by the CNAM and the Postal Service network to claim their reimbursements, at far more competitive rates than via bank transfers. This practice offers many advantages.

For the CNAM:

  • reduced transaction costs for insured persons;
  • improved information for insured members concerning their files and CNAM operations; and,
  • reduced operating costs related to queries.

For Mauripost:

  • improved business results (transaction flow);
  • development of the cash transfer facility; and,
  • modernized work tools.

For the operators and the University:

  • improved knowledge of the use of mobile phone systems in Mauritania.
