A campaign to extend coverage
Country: Yemen

The Board of Directors of the General Corporation of Social Security (GCSS) of the Republic of Yemen approved a campaign to extend social security coverage for the period 2009 - 2010. This campaign was inaugurated on 2 November 2009.

The campaign aims at promoting insurance awareness among private sector workers and informal sector employees and offers voluntary coverage for Yemenis working abroad, employers and self-employed persons. It is also targeted at fishermen, craftsmen, the vulnerable work force and small enterprises employing one or more people. This campaign aims at providing social security for around 30 thousand additional persons.

At the same time, the institution has undertaken geographical expansion of its services by opening new branch offices throughout the country.

The GCSS plans to implement the branch of work injuries and occupational diseases and to cover, in the initial stage, more than 50 percent of those covered under old age, invalidity and survivorship.
