Extended period of sickness allowance
Country: Australia

The restrictions on the period for which Sickness Allowance (SA) is payable are to be abolished. Currently, SA is cancelled after 52 or 104 weeks' continuous receipt unless certain restrictive criteria regarding the incapacity for work are satisfied. As a result some people who still have a temporary incapacity after cancellation of SA and need to claim income support are forced to claim Special Benefit or look for work.

As from March 1997, these restrictions will be abolished. This will eliminate the inconvenience to people of changing income support payments unnecessarily or looking for work when they are unfit and will allow them to remain eligible for vocational assistance.

Implementation date: 03.1997
