Turkey to host XIX World Safety and Health Congress in 2011

XIX World Congress on Safety and Health

Turkey will host the next World Congress on Safety and Health at Work – the broadest global gathering of occupational health experts and policy-makers – in Istanbul, 11-15 September 2011, the host organization has confirmed.

Agreement on the venue of the XIX World Congress on Safety and Health was formalized with representatives of the International Labour Office (ILO) and the International Social Security Association (ISSA), the two bodies that have co-organized the triennial event since 1955, during a meeting in Germany this week.

The theme of the World Congress will be “Building a Culture of Prevention for a Healthy and Safe Future”, and the gathering will give particular attention to the impact of the economic crisis on the workplace.

“The global financial and economic crisis has had adverse effects on employment and working life and working life, and also on occupational safety and health all over the world,” Ömer Dinçer, Turkish Minister of Labour and Social Security – whose Ministry will host the Congress – stated in an announcement for the event.

“Global challenges necessitate global cooperation and one of the most effective and efficient ways is to invest jointly in safe working environment which will promote well-being and boost productivity by means of eliminating injuries and illnesses,” he said.

Troika

The Congress is expected to gather several thousand safety and health professionals, employers and managers, and representatives of trade unions and social security organizations for an intensive programme of debate, analysis and exchange of good practices in occupational safety and health.

The hosts of future World Congresses have also been agreed with the ILO and the ISSA: in 2014 the event will be hosted by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) in Germany; and in 2017 by the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore. A "troika" group involving representatives of the three host organizations together with the ISSA met in Düsseldorf on 2 November (see photo) and will regularly coordinate plans and share experience.
