Representatives of social security organizations from the Eastern European and Eurasian regions continued to discuss improved social protection of migrant workers at the second meeting of the ISSA and the IASPF Working Group on Migrant Workers in Eurasia that commenced work in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, on 15 May.

On the eve of the working group meeting, the Director of the ISSA Social  Security Observatory, Edmundo Martinho, accompanied by the President of the  National Office of Social Insurance of the Republic of Moldova, Maria Borta, and  ISSA officials, was received by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of  Moldova, Mr Mihai Moldovanu.

During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed the commitment of his country to the extension of social security coverage, and to respond to the particular needs of migrant workers, and confirmed that his country was open to increasing cooperation with the ISSA in these fields.

The proposal to develop a common framework guidance document for the social protection of migrant workers was proposed by representatives of social security organizations from the region in 2011, and led to the establishment of a working group jointly between the ISSA and the International Association of Pension and Social Funds (IAPSF).

The working group is chaired by Maria Borta, President of the National Office of Social Insurance of the Republic of Moldova.
