- UK: Pensions 'require funding boost', surveys say
www.bbc.co.uk (31.08.2010). Workers may need to pay more for their pensions amid a continuing picture of fund deficits, two surveys suggest. Employees of large firms could have to invest more because of the costs of a new system to include more people in company pensions, actuaries warned.
 
- France: La taxation de l'assurance-vie va être durcie
lesechos.fr (31.08.2010). La CSG sur les revenus de l'assurance-vie va être prélevée chaque année, et non plus au dénouement des contrats. Une taxe exceptionnelle est prévue pour les assureurs ayant constitué des réserves de capitalisation en franchise d'impôt. Les complémentaires santé sont mises à contribution. Un gain de 3,2 milliards d'euros pour les comptes publics.

Scotland on Sunday (29.08.2010). New crisis is looming for Britain's pensions industry as the government safety net set up to support failed company schemes has admitted it will struggle to prop up a growing number facing collapse.
 
- Malta: Proposed parental leave extension – should we go for it?
ndependent.com.mt (30.08.2010). At a recent seminar organised by the Labour-affiliated foundation Ideat, the economic impact of the proposed extension of parental leave was discussed. The seminar was chaired by Joe Gerada, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Human Resources Development (FHRD) and the main speakers were economist Professor Edward Scicluna and chief executive officer of the Malta Business Bureau (MBB) Joseph Tanti, who had contrasting views with regard to the new proposed legislation. Whereas Prof. Scicluna sees it as an investment well worth making, despite any costs that might be involved, Mr Tanti sees it as being a potential threat to local businesses.
 
- US: Decline in fertility rates, recession cause global social security problems
voanews.com (25.08.2010). A decline in fertility rates in many nations is causing many people to worry that when they retire, their governments will not have enough money to provide them with social security pensions. The recent economic recession has made the problem worse.
 
- Ireland: Jobless will have to work for the dole or lose benefits
Independent.ie (30.08.2010). Unemployed people claiming the dole will be made to work in the community for their benefits under new government plans.
 
- A survey by Swiss health insurance companies finds the public has reservations about managed care
swissinfo.ch (30.08.2010). Health insurance companies are launching a campaign to try to correct a perceived lack of information about the Swiss health system among the wider public.

- Colombia avanza en la implementación de los Multifondos

El 1 de Julio de 2010 el Ministerio de Hacienda y Crédito Público de Colombia publicó el Decreto No. 2373 (ver acá), por el cual se establece el esquema de Multifondos para la administración de los recursos de pensión obligatoria del Régimen de Ahorro Individual con Solidaridad (RAIS) y para las pensiones de retiro programado y se reglamenta parcialmente la Ley 1328 de 2009.
 
- US: More Emergency Departments serve as safety nets

Emergency departments are increasingly serving as the safety net for medically underserved patients, especially adults with Medicaid, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded. As evidence of this trend, the co-authors point to the rise in rates of visits to EDs in the U.S. among adults on Medicaid.
