New ISSA network to promote a culture of prevention
The network, which is part of the International Section for a Culture of Prevention, is inspired by the objectives of the Seoul Declaration on Safety and Health at Work, adopted in 2008. The Seoul Declaration was signed by policy-makers, business leaders and safety experts, and affirms that occupational safety and health at work is a fundamental human right and a societal responsibility. The Seoul Declaration has attracted almost 2,500 institutional and individual supporters from all world regions.
The global network for a culture of prevention aims to provide a platform for cooperation to exchange knowledge and good practices to enhance a worldwide prevention culture, and is hosted by the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) with the support of the International Labour Organization and the International Social Security Association (ISSA).
Addressing the event, ISSA Secretary General Hans-Horst Konkolewsky welcomed the innovative approach of the new International Section.
“What is needed is a conceptual shift towards an inclusive culture of prevention that encompasses other branches of social security, and that complements traditional occupational safety and health approaches to reach diverse actors in society,” he said.
“The Seoul Declaration, and the International Section for a Culture of Prevention, provide us with a unique instrument to move from commitments to practical actions that will improve the health of workers around the world,” Mr. Konkolewsky stated.
Istanbul Declaration
The launch of the new Section coincided with a Summit of 33 Ministers of Labour, invited by the Turkish Government, who signed a Declaration calling for priority to be given to national occupational safety and health strategies, and to building strong and sustained "preventative safety and health cultures" in their countries.
Concluding the event KOSHA President Hun Ki Baek and Secretary General Gye-Wan Bae outlined future plans for the International Section in the areas of data collection, dissemination of good practices and campaigns involving workers, employers and governments.
The International Section for a Culture of Prevention is the 12th Section to be established as part of the ISSA’s Special Commission on Prevention, which bring together a wide range of experts and practitioners from all branches of occupational safety and health.
