Pension reform, the extension of social security coverage and good governance will be the focus of the first Regional Social Security Forum for the Americas, in Brasilia, Brazil, 24-27 May 2010.

The Americas region has experienced some of the most diverse and pioneering reforms of social security in recent decades, which have contributed to improved coverage and performance of schemes. The three-day Forum, which is expected to gather up to 200 policy-makers, administrators and experts from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, will analyse and debate a range of critical issues facing social security schemes in the region. The Forum is organized by the International Social Security Association (ISSA) and is hosted by the Ministry of Social Insurance, Brazil.

His Excellency Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, is scheduled to address the Forum participants at the opening ceremony on 24 May 2010.

Developments and trends of social security in the Americas

A new report prepared by the ISSA on developments and trends of social security in the Americas region, Dynamic Social Security for the Americas: Social Cohesion and Institutional Diversity , has been prepared for the Forum. The report looks in particular at the areas of social health protection, pension system reform and the role of social dialogue, and points to the potential for social security schemes to contribute to greater social cohesion and equitable development. The report will be released on 23 May 2010 and will be available on the ISSA Website.
