Asia and the Pacific
The Regional Social Security Forum for Asia and the Pacific, which concluded work in Manila, Philippines on 23 October 2009, provided a unique platform for policy-makers and social security leaders from the region to identify and discuss the main emerging social security developments and trends in Asia and the Pacific.

The Forum took place in a regional context shaped by globalization, internal and external migration, a growth of informal economies, changes in family structures, and the impact of the financial crisis.

The four main themes of the Forum were:

  • Social security developments and trends in Asia and the Pacific.
  • Governance and the social security reform process.
  • The imperatives of health-care coverage.
  • Pension coverage and demographic ageing.

ISSA President Corazon de la Paz-Bernardo welcomes Noli de Castro, Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines, to the Regional Social Security Forum.

The Forum culminated in a Social Security Summit, which aimed to promote the important role of social security in society by showcasing the contribution of dynamic social security to cope with current and future socio-economic challenges in Asia and the Pacific. The Forum was an important milestone towards the World Social Security Forum, to be held in South Africa in 2010.

The Forum was hosted by the member institutions of the Philippine Social Security Association.
