Secretary-general Helmut Ehnes reported that the number of members of ISSA Mining has doubled since the last General Assembly. New members stem from Vietnam, Korea, Canada, China, Germany, and Belgium.
In the election of the Bureau of the Mining Section by the General Assembly, the President Thedor Bülhoff, the Vice-President John McEndoo, and the Secretary-general Helmut Ehnes have been re-elected unanimously.
The president of ISSA Mining suggested to the General Assembly to elect Bui Hong Linh, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), Vietnam, as a second Vice President of ISSA Mining. Mr Bui Hong Linh has been voted into office with one consent of all delegates present and will work together with Mr John McEndoo. With this extension of ISSA Mining’s board, Vietnam will be a valuable focal point for the ASEAN region.
At the invitation of ISSA Mining’s Vice President John McEndoo, the General Assembly visited the operations at the Moab Khotsong gold mine, located some 160 km/100 miles South West of Johannesburg.
This mine employs around 5700 people and boasts the world’s deepest single-lift shaft – 3,106 meters uninterrupted hoist to surface. Whilst the productive Gold output has grown steadily – improving by 27% in 2010, the safety record of the mine is also continuously improving. The all accident frequency rate per million hours worked has improved from 27.85 in 2007 to 22.95 in 2008 and to 18.56 in 2009. At the time of the visit, the rate had again been improved to 17.99 in 2010.
ISSA Mining thanks AngloGold Ashanti, the world’s 3rd largest Gold Mining company for sponsoring the ISSA Mining meetings and making the visit to the impressive Moab Khotsong gold mine possible!
