Further Steps Towards International Concepts for Mining Safety: ISSA Mining Visiting Turkish Coal Mines
ISSA Mining's Secretary General Helmut Ehnes, Senior Labor Inspector Matthias Stenzel and Mining Inspection Specialist Hans-Georg Beyer, ISSA Mining's Technical Secretary and long-year specialist for mining safety Dr Günter Levin, RAG safety manager Dieter Mantwill and consultant Nevzat Bagli met with Burhan Inan, Director General of the state-owned Turkish Coal Corporation (Türkiye Taskömürü Kurumu, TTK) on the basis of the preceding discussions in July 2010 on a joint project to improve labor safety in the Turkish coal mining industry. Considering the economical performance, tools to improve labor safety and occupational health will be designed, with a special focus on a systematic management system including audits by international safety experts. The conclusions will be used in other regions of the world as well. The tools will base on the standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
First outcomes will be introduced on the XIX World Congress on Safety and Health at Work as well as the World Mining Congress, both to take place in Istanbul in September 2011. At TTK's Karadon mine and Kozlu mine, the delegation visited the mine operations, the rise drift and the drifting, and discussed work safety with TTK's representatives.
