Fair Stone: Responsible production of natural stone gains momentum

In close cooperation with ISSA Mining and other international experts, ISSA Mining member WiN=WiN, Agency for Global Responsibility (www.win--win.com) established the social and environmental standard “Fair Stone” (http://fairstone.win--win.com) in 2008. The standard focuses on ILO Conventions (www.ilo.org) as well as on safety and health at the workplaces, the management system and environmental issues. Its objective is to improve the working conditions in quarries and factories for natural stones in emerging economies. Until now, Fair Stone is present in India, China, Vietnam and Turkey.

Local Fair Stone Representatives regularly visit those factories and quarries which are registered within the Fair Stone system to control, support and strengthen the implementation process of the factories and quarries. Furthermore internal Pre Audits take place to check whether the factory / quarry is ready to label their Fair Stone consignments. 

Also different workshops take place concerning work safety and health (e.g. silicosis) and work with some local institutions. Safety signs were designed to be shrink wrapped and placed in the different working areas. Furthermore the Fair Stone suppliers learned about different preventive measures (use and type of masks, earplugs, goggles, etc.) in the workshops.

Mutual respect, a common dialogue and transparency are essential criteria for Fair Stone. A transparent documentation is necessary to know what is happening on supplier’s side and to show other stakeholders the efforts which have been achieved.
